The Hostess Stand Slide

Peeking over the hostess stand in the hotel cafe to see where your name is on the list is fine (if a bit unrefined). You're famished; the list is in eyeshot.

Actually walking behind the stand to look at the book while the host or hostess has stepped away is -- I must say it -- uncouth.

Shall I tsk-tsk you? Please don't make me. Stay an arm's length from the stand and instead shoot piercing, hurry-up-I'm-hungry looks at people eating to pass the time until you are summoned.
