Historic Hotel

Place: The Australian Hotel, Sydney

Evokes: Pints of lager sipped on a roof at sunset

Fantasy: Sitting outside this 1913 gem in a halter dress on a roasting-hot Christmas day while overstimulated, under-clothed tourists bicker lazily over nothing whatsoever. (I'm finishing Bill Bryson's "In a Sunburned Country" and look forward to seeing Baz Luhrmann's "Australia" next week, so it is all-Oz day here.)

Historic Hotel

Place: La Quinta Resort & Spa

Evokes: Croquet with Carole Lombard, followed by pink lemonade ice cream

Fantasy: It's 106 degrees at 2AM, and I'm watching a total lunar eclipse from the golf course when the sprinklers suddenly start

Historic Hotel Tuesday

Place: The Oak Room, The Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, Boston

Evokes: Plaid taffeta, Presidential cufflinks, fancy water/waiters

Fantasy: Toast and strong coffee quickly downed while talking a boa-bedecked gossip columnist out of the story she's running the morning of election day

Historic Hotel Tuesday

Place: Hotel Denver, Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Evokes: Whiskey in crystal

Fantasy: It would be a travesty to register at this grande dame in blue jeans. I'd want to wear a cape. Or a monocle. Or this hat. Or all three at once.
